Step 1. Start with a leg base

Draw a sketch of a side view foot. Cowboy boots have a low thick heel so make sure the foot is completely flat on the ground. If you are having a hard time drawing the leg check the “How to draw legs” tutorial or my online course on “How to draw feet” where you’ll find dozens of feet tutorials, videos, and tips on how to draw every tiny detail.

Alternatively, if drawing feet is not your thing at all, you can always download a premade template for drawing shoes here.

Draw the base of the foot.

Step 2. Mark the main parts of the boot

ark off the width and the height of the boot. Cowboy boots are quite spacious, so make sure your lines are not too close to the foot. Leave some more space in front of the toes and put the guideline a slightly higher than the toes.

The horizontal line, which marks the height of the the boots can be anywhere between the ankle and the calf.

Step 3. Outline of the cowboy boots

Draw an outline around the leg leaving plenty of blank space. The only place where the boot contour touches the foot is the sole. Notice the perky nose of the boot and the soft roundness of it. You may leave some slight bulges around the ankles area. Usually this is where the leather folds.

Pay attention to the opening of the boot. Its shape is arched up. Try not to make it too flat or too high.

Step 4. Drawing the sole

Follow the line of the sole and draw a line right below it. It should be thick enough to see is. Notice the rounded ends.

Now it’s time to bring our attention to the heel. Use a dashed line that follows the curve of the sole to define where the heel ends. Now draw two vertical lines with enough space between them.

Step 5. Outline the heel

Follow the guideline and finish the heel of the boot. Cowboy boot heels have a cubic shape. Another special fature is that they are wider in the top and narrower in the bottom.

Pay attention to the backside of the heel. The line is slightly tilted, not perfectly straight., rather than straight.

Step 6. Add the loop

It’s time to add the loop on the top of the boot’s opening. There are so many possible shapes for this one, but for this tutorial, we will draw a rectangular one. Feel free to experiment with the shape of the loops later on. They can be pointy or curved, wide or narrow.

Draw the loop in the middle of the boot’s opening . It needs to overlap the opening of the boot. Erase the boot opening line to make it look like the loop is in front of the boot.

Step 7. Draw the seams

These are important details that will completely turn the basic boot into a cowboy one.

Draw a centerline that goes from the top of the opening, down to the sole. Make sure it is not completely straight because the boot has volume, it is not flat.

The second seam has a bit more complicated shape. Right at the front of the boot it looks like the head of an arrow. Then the line dips down and the line continues in a half-circle shape towards the heel.

You can draw an additional seam at the top under the loop.

Add some dashed lines next to all seams to make your sketch more detailed and realistic.

Step 8. Final Details

The final step is to draw the embroidery which is an essential part of cowboy boots. There are so many different ways you can draw the embroidery – from leaves and flowers to feathers and leaf ornaments. Get creative with the design – it can be as elaborated as you like.

The embroidery of cowboy boots is usually located in the ankles-to-calves area. It is usually close to the vertical side seam.
